In a vibrant celebration of Lagos’ cultural and aquatic heritage, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, alongside his wife, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and his wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, led dignitaries, tourists, and officials at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta on Saturday in Victoria Island.
The regatta, held simultaneously across various locations, highlighted Lagos’ rich traditions with spectacular displays by the five Ibile divisions. The event featured intricately decorated boats, competitive rowing, and live performances, captivating guests with a memorable showcase of Lagos’ maritime culture.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by his deputy and other officials, embarked on a waterways tour to emphasize the untapped opportunities for tourism, recreation, and investment.
Speaking after the tour, the Governor described the Lagos Boat Regatta as a vibrant celebration of the state’s waterways and cultural identity. He highlighted the historical and economic significance of Lagos’ waterways, urging investors and tourists to explore their vast potential.
“This event reflects Lagos’ cultural richness and unique bond with water, which is central to our identity and livelihood,” Sanwo-Olu said. “The regatta symbolizes a transformation and revival of our culture, showcasing our commitment to developing tourism through our waterways. With one-third of Lagos surrounded by water, we must leverage this ecosystem for transportation, tourism, and economic growth.”
Sanwo-Olu noted that the regatta aligns with his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus agenda, emphasizing tourism and the creative economy as key drivers of Lagos’ socio-economic development.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, praised the regatta as a reflection of Lagosians’ commitment to preserving their heritage.
“This year’s theme, ‘Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,’ underscores the importance of our waterways in shaping our history and identity,” she said. She also commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership in advancing infrastructure and tourism while promoting environmental sustainability.
The event culminated in live performances by top musical acts, including Niniola, Atawewe, Pheelz, and 9ice, solidifying Lagos’ reputation as a hub for culture, tourism, and innovation. Attendees left inspired by Lagos’ vibrant heritage and forward-thinking vision for its waterways.
