The Presidency has condemned former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi for his comments on the recent stampedes in Anambra and Oyo states, accusing him of politicizing the tragedies.
In a statement by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, Obi’s remarks were labeled as insensitive and opportunistic.
“When looking for someone who benefits from chaos—what the Yoruba call ‘Aríje nínú Màdàrú’—Peter Obi fits the description,” Dare stated. “His comments on the unfortunate events in Anambra and Oyo lack statesmanship and decency, showing a disturbing tendency to exploit tragedy for political gain. This attempt to score cheap points is unbecoming of a leader.”
Dare contrasted Obi’s response with that of President Tinubu, who he said demonstrated genuine leadership in handling the situation.
“In moments of tragedy, leaders should offer support and reason. President Tinubu canceled all engagements, expressed profound sadness over the loss of lives, and ordered an immediate investigation. That is the behavior expected of a responsible leader,” Dare said.
He emphasized that the government is focused on addressing the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians and improving their standard of living.
“These incidents highlight the need for better crowd management, patience, and adherence to event regulations. The government remains committed to tackling these challenges while ensuring such tragedies do not occur again,” he added.
The Presidency urged leaders to prioritize unity and compassion during times of crisis, calling on all Nigerians to exercise patience and understanding as efforts to resolve the nation’s challenges continue.
