Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has urged Christian pilgrims in the state to postpone their planned visits to Israel due to the ongoing instability in the Middle East.
The region has been engulfed in intense violence between Israel and certain Arab nations, leading to widespread casualties.
Speaking during the 2024 State Christmas Carol celebration, organized by the Niger State government in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Governor Bago expressed concerns about the safety of pilgrims.
Addressing attendees on Sunday, he stated, “Traveling to Israel under current circumstances would be tantamount to endangering lives. I strongly advise waiting until peace is restored.”
The governor underscored the importance of prioritizing the well-being of citizens and said he would not endorse any pilgrimage that might expose them to harm.
Deputy Speaker Afiniki Dauda, representing the governor at the event, reaffirmed this stance, urging patience from the Christian faithful.
In response, Rev. Bulus Yohanna, chairman of the Niger State chapter of CAN, appealed to Governor Bago to explore alternative pilgrimage destinations.
He highlighted federal opportunities for trips to locations such as Jordan, Turkey, Rome, and Greece, allowing Christians to fulfil their spiritual obligations in safer environments.
