Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to death in Osun State for allegedly stealing a fowl, has insisted on his innocence, claiming he was wrongly convicted of a crime he knew nothing about.
Olowookere, who says he was only 17 when arrested, shared his story in an interview with Punch Newspaper.
He recounted his arrest in November 2010 in Oyan, Odo-Otin Local Government Area, alongside another man, Sunday Morakinyo. Both were accused of robbing a police officer, Tope Balogun, of two fowls and eggs.
Contrary to police claims, Olowookere denied confessing to the crime or making any statement. He also refuted allegations that he lived alone in a six-bedroom apartment at the time.
“I lived with my parents until I was arrested. My family never owned a six-bedroom flat,” he said.
In January 2013, the duo was arraigned before Justice Jide Falola at the Osun State High Court in Ikirun.
Despite pleading not guilty, they were convicted on December 17, 2014. Olowookere and Morakinyo were sentenced to death for conspiracy to commit armed robbery, life imprisonment for robbery, and three years for stealing.
Olowookere has maintained his innocence ever since. Tragically, his co-defendant, Morakinyo, reportedly developed mental health issues after what Olowookere described as severe torture in police custody.
“Morakinyo is mentally ill now. He bled from his ears, nose, head, and anus after the police tortured us. This happened at the Okuku police station and later at the SARS cell in Osogbo. His condition kept worsening, and today, he doesn’t recognize anyone,” Olowookere said.
He described the harrowing conditions they endured, claiming he was tasked with cleaning the blood-stained cell daily. Despite his co-defendant’s condition, Olowookere said, the police provided no medical attention during their detention.
In light of the case, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an investigation and initiated steps for Olowookere’s pardon. Writing on his official X account, Governor Adeleke said:
“I have received the report of a young man sentenced to death for allegedly stealing a fowl. I have directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to investigate the matter and begin processes for a prerogative of mercy. Osun State remains committed to justice and fairness.”
Olowookere, now older and still in custody, dreams of a better future. “I want to become a doctor and contribute positively to society,” he said.
