The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Commissioners of Police in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to investigate the recent stampedes that occurred during palliative distribution in Maitama, Abuja, and Okija, Anambra State.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP revealed that the organizers of these events, as well as a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, failed to seek police protection or notify the state commands about their plans. The IGP described this negligence as a significant lapse in ensuring public safety.
In a statement titled “IGP Warns Against Unauthorised Distribution of Palliatives and Funfairs,” the police chief expressed concern over the chaotic distribution of relief items, particularly during the festive season. The statement underscored the need for structured and secure procedures to prevent such tragedies.
On December 18, 2024, a children’s funfair in Ibadan ended in disaster when a stampede led to the deaths of 35 children and left many others critically injured.
The incident drew public outrage, prompting Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to pledge accountability for those responsible.
Days later, on December 21, 2024, another stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, during a palliative distribution event. This resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals and injuries to several others. The same day, a similar tragedy unfolded in Okija, Anambra State, where a palliative distribution organized by the Obijackson Foundation caused the deaths of three people, while many others sustained injuries.
The IGP emphasized that uncoordinated relief efforts pose serious risks, including chaos, injuries, and loss of life.
He warned that negligence by organizers would be treated as a criminal offense under Nigerian law, urging them to involve security agencies in planning such events.
To prevent future incidents, the IGP called for collaboration among government officials, community leaders, and NGOs to establish an organized framework for aid distribution. He also advised citizens to prioritize their safety when attending such events.
Thorough investigations have been ordered to determine accountability for the Abuja and Anambra incidents, with a view to pursuing appropriate legal actions. The police extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
