Ibadan stampede: Do not allow innocent people to spend too long in detention – Old students tell police

Islamic High School Old Students Association (IHSOSA) has appealed to the police authorities in Oyo state not to allow those who have no direct link with Ibadan stampede to spend too long in detention.

The association made this declaration via a statement signed by its National President, Dr. Bayo Busari.

The statement was made available to journalists on Friday.

 

Recall that no fewer than thirty five children have been confirmed dead as a result of stampede that occurred in the school.

The incident occured during a children carnival that took place in the school on Wednesday.

Our correspondent gathered that eight people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

But, Busari in his reaction, commenced the police and Oyo state government for taking the bold steps.

He however advised the police not to allow anyone who has no direct link to the programme not to spend too long in the custody.

He used the opportunity to commensurate with the family of the victims.

Busari, while stating that nothing could compensate for the lives lost, urged the police to carry out a diligent, thorough, and professional investigation.

He maintained that that this will help to unravel what led to the stampede.

“This investigation is not just to establish the culpability of individuals or organisations involved with the organisation of the event, but to proffer preventive measures against a future occurrence.

The statement commended the efforts of the state government for rising to the occasion in bringing the incident under control.

Busari, however, admonished that the police should ensure that those who had no direct bearing with the event but have been invited for questioning do not stay longer in detention than it is necessary.
