The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to promptly address the issue of cash scarcity across Nigeria.
In a communique jointly signed by NLC President Mr. Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Mr. Emmanuel Ugboaja, after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Owerri, Ajaero expressed concern over the prolonged cash scarcity, which he described as a burden on struggling Nigerians.
Ajaero highlighted that the NEC had observed that Nigerians are losing five per cent of their funds each time they withdraw cash, a situation that significantly impacts small businesses and informal economy workers.
The NLC is demanding immediate government intervention to correct this systemic issue and ensure that cash is readily available for small business transactions and economic growth.
He also called for the suspension of the tax bill currently before the National Assembly, citing concerns over its political manipulation and exclusion of key stakeholders.
Ajaero emphasized the need for inclusive dialogue to establish a fair and equitable tax system that benefits all citizens.
On the issue of insecurity, Ajaero raised the alarm over the escalating violence, citing reports of ransom payments totalling N2.23 trillion this year amid 51.8 million recorded crime incidents.
He stressed the need for decisive government action to protect lives and property, restore public confidence, and uphold the rule of law.
The NLC also condemned the police and the state governor for orchestrating the recent invasion and ransacking of the NLC Edo State Council Secretariat.
Ajaero set a deadline of 14 working days, up to January 8, 2025, for the state government and police to vacate the secretariat and return all confiscated properties.
Failure to comply, he warned, could lead to significant measures by the Congress to defend workers and trade union rights.
Ajaero concluded by urging citizens to find hope, resilience, and unity during the festive season.
