The Nigerian Army Council has approved the promotion of senior officers to higher ranks, as announced on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
The decision includes the elevation of 35 Brigadier Generals to Major General and the promotion of 73 Colonels to Brigadier General.
Among those promoted to Major General are Brigadier General A. Garba, Acting Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army; Brigadier General U.M. Alkali, Deputy Chief of Administration, Directorate of Veteran Affairs; and Brigadier General A.G.L. Haruna, Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division and Commander Sector 1 of Operation HADIN KAI.
Others include commanders, directors, and key personnel from various army divisions and specialized departments.
The promotions to Brigadier General include Colonel’s commanding engineering brigades, supply and transport units, medical facilities, and intelligence groups.
Notable promotions include Colonel S.M. Iliya, Commander of the 43 Engineers Brigade; Colonel N.S. Onuchukwu, Chief Medical Director of 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospitals; and Colonel J.C. Mbanefo of the Army War College Nigeria, among others.
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, congratulated the newly promoted officers and their families.
He emphasized the importance of their new responsibilities, urging them to adopt innovative strategies to address Nigeria’s contemporary security challenges.
He also called on them to remain loyal to the Constitution and committed to their oath of service.
The announcement reflects the Army’s commitment to recognizing excellence and strengthening leadership within its ranks.
