The federal government has announced plans to roll out a “Proof of Address System Initiative” across all 774 local government areas in the country, aiming to strengthen security and improve governance.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, shared this update during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja for the activation of the initiative.
According to Akume, Nigeria faces significant challenges, including insecurity, social issues, economic instability, and inefficient governance.
The Proof of Address Initiative is designed to provide residents with secure, verifiable addresses, which will enhance national security, support government planning, and promote societal order.
“This initiative will integrate into administrative processes across both public and private sectors, reflecting President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to resolving critical national challenges while fostering a safer and more prosperous Nigeria,” Akume stated.
He urged ministries, departments, and agencies to require proof of address certificates to establish reliable identification systems.
Akume emphasized that the lack of an efficient address system has exacerbated security issues, hindered crime prevention, and complicated development planning.
Bello Lawal, National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), described the initiative as a transformative step for local governments.
He noted that it would improve security, drive economic development, and enhance social inclusion at the grassroots level.
“This initiative is not just an administrative tool but a game-changer in how local governments engage with their communities,” Lawal said.
He added that by formalizing address identification, the project would improve accountability secure neighbourhoods and align with the federal government’s efforts to build a comprehensive national social register.
Lawal also highlighted the initiative’s role in addressing poverty, unemployment, and inequality while establishing a foundation for social and economic progress.
