Drama unfolds as Edo Asset Recovery Committee attempts to seize bus conveying PDP lawyers

Must read

A tense situation unfolded in Benin on Wednesday when members of the Edo State Asset Recovery Committee attempted to seize a 32-seater coaster bus used by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legal team to transport them to the 2024 Edo governorship election petitions tribunal.

The bus, which was owned by the state government, was being used to convey senior lawyers representing the PDP to the tribunal sitting at the Edo High Court. Earlier in the day, before the tribunal’s session, the recovery committee attempted to take possession of the vehicle, alleging that it had been wrongfully taken by officials from the previous administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Reports indicate that an initial agreement was reached between the committee and the lawyers, allowing the bus to return the legal team to their destinations before it would be seized. However, following the tribunal’s session, the committee sought to recover the bus immediately, leading to a confrontation between its members and the bus occupants.

The altercation escalated into a physical scuffle, prompting intervention from prominent figures of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP to help defuse the situation.

At the end, the lawyers were allowed to leave the court in the bus, as originally agreed.
