Atiku queries Tinubu’s administration over alleged hacking of NBS website

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns about the reported hacking of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website.

Describing the incident as an “unpleasant development,” Atiku suggested it further reflects the challenges plaguing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The alleged cyberattack follows the recent publication of the Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey (CESPS) by the NBS. Atiku’s Media Office expressed apprehension that the hack might be a ploy to undermine the integrity of crucial national data used for planning, research, and development purposes.

“The hacking of the NBS website underscores the credibility crisis of the current administration,” Atiku stated. “When data and statistics are subjected to political manipulation, it becomes counterproductive and raises doubts about the reliability of information shared with the public.”

The former vice president also questioned the timing of the hack, which came shortly after the release of sensitive security data. He warned that such incidents could lead to public distrust in the authenticity of statistics issued by the Bureau.

In a statement, Atiku’s Media Office remarked: “The unprecedented claim that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website has been hacked is an unpleasant development, adding to the series of troubling events associated with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“This incident, occurring shortly after the publication of data on the Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey (CESPS), highlights the administration’s credibility crisis.

“It is hoped that this is not an underhanded attempt to compromise the integrity of critical data essential for national planning, development, and research.

“When data is manipulated or subjected to political considerations, it undermines its purpose and reliability. The timing of this so-called hack, especially after the release of alarming security statistics, raises suspicion.

“This situation may lead to the assumption that every statistic released by the Bureau is influenced or compromised by external interference.”

Atiku called for transparency and accountability in addressing the issue, urging the government to prioritize safeguarding the credibility of national institutions.
