Nigeria’s active mobile users drop to 157 million – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported a decrease in the number of active mobile users in the country, with figures dropping to 157 million in October 2024.

This marks a decline from the 159.5 million recorded in September.

The NCC’s latest industry report sheds light on this reduction, attributing it to efforts to clean up inactive lines, deactivate non-rechargeable accounts, and enhance data integrity across telecom networks.

Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, explained, “This slight reduction reflects the ongoing process of improving network efficiency and ensuring accurate subscriber data.”

Despite this decline, Nigeria’s broadband sector remains strong, with over 90 million subscriptions, making the country a leader in mobile broadband usage in Africa.

The broadband penetration rate currently stands at 47.1%, showcasing the sector’s resilience.

The report also highlights market dominance by MTN Nigeria, followed by Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile. The NCC emphasized its commitment to addressing industry challenges and advancing telecom services to ensure continued growth.
