The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified the circumstances surrounding Vincent Makinde, a dismissed police officer who escaped custody and is now facing prosecution.
The clarification follows a viral video showing Makinde in leg restraints, claiming to be an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), and a subsequent call for his release by renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN.
In a press release issued by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, the police revealed that Makinde was dismissed in 2022 after being found guilty of multiple offences, including abuse of office, extortion, gross misconduct, and insubordination.
Following his dismissal, Makinde escaped lawful custody while awaiting prosecution after assaulting a senior officer on duty.
According to the police, Makinde resurfaced in June 2024, falsely claiming to be an ASP and carrying a rifle while impersonating an active-duty officer.
His arrest was necessitated when he was discovered engaging in this unlawful act.
The police stated that Makinde displayed violent behaviour and resisted arrest, prompting the use of leg restraints for safety and to prevent another escape attempt.
The press release emphasized that the use of such restraining devices is a standard global practice for individuals who aggressively resist lawful detention.
The Force also debunked allegations of inhumane treatment, justifying the measures as precautionary.
Further investigations have linked Makinde to other criminal activities beyond the offences that led to his initial dismissal.
The police are continuing to investigate his impersonation and related offences.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to transparency, accountability, and upholding the rule of law,” ACP Adejobi stated, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to ensuring that erring officers face justice while maintaining public trust.
Vincent Makinde remains in custody, awaiting the conclusion of investigations and subsequent prosecution.
