The Kano and Jigawa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has confiscated 2,179 kilograms of pangolin scales during a coordinated operation in the Mubi area of Adamawa State.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone D and the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), also led to the arrest of one suspect.
Saidu Nuruddeen, the command’s public relations officer, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
He highlighted that the seizure demonstrates the NCS’s dedication to curbing illegal wildlife trafficking and safeguarding Nigeria’s biodiversity.
“The operation, led by Comptroller Dauda Ibrahim Chana, marks a significant milestone in the fight against wildlife trafficking,” the statement said.
Nuruddeen explained that actionable intelligence from the WJC facilitated the raid, which uncovered the scales in two warehouses.
Since partnering with the WJC, the NCS has intercepted 21,582 kilograms of pangolin scales, with 11,673.2 kilograms confiscated this year alone.
The recent seizure represents the third major bust of 2024.
The NCS reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting those involved in the illegal wildlife trade and pledged to intensify its crackdown on such activities.
