Tinubu renames University of Abuja

Must read

The Federal Executive Council has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in recognition of the significant contributions of former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

The announcement was made during the council’s final meeting of the year, presided over by President Bola Tinubu. The decision is a tribute to Gowon’s enduring legacy, particularly his leadership during Nigeria’s civil war and his efforts in post-war reconciliation and national development.

General Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, is credited with spearheading key infrastructural projects and advancing education during his tenure, a period marked by economic growth fueled by the oil boom.

Established in 1988, the University of Abuja has provided diverse educational opportunities through its conventional and distance learning programs, serving students across Nigeria.

The proposed renaming will require formal approval from the National Assembly to become official.
