A mayor from the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi was fatally shot on Sunday alongside three others, local officials confirmed.
Jesús Eduardo Franco, who led the municipality of Tancanhaitz and was affiliated with the ruling Morena party, was discovered dead inside a vehicle along with the three other victims, according to the state prosecutor’s office.
“We deeply mourn the loss of Eduardo Franco, municipal president of Tancanbaitz,” wrote Morena party leader Rita Rodríguez on the social media platform X.
She also called for justice, arguing authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Mexico has faced escalating violence against public officials, much of it linked to organized crime.
Last month, local media reported that Alejandro Arcos, a mayor in Guerrero state, was brutally killed and decapitated just days after assuming office, his severed head left on a track.
Since 2006, when the Mexican government began deploying military forces to combat drug cartels, over 450,000 homicides have been recorded, with thousands of people still missing, according to official data.
