Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, has called for calm and unity amidst debates sparked by the recent launch of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards (BSCPG), also known as “Anyam Nyor,” by the incumbent Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.
The initiative has drawn comparisons to the Community Volunteer Guards established during Ortom’s tenure, with some suggesting it is merely a rebranded version of the earlier program.
Addressing the growing public discourse, Chief Ortom urged residents to set aside divisive rhetoric and focus on fostering peace.
He acknowledged the natural diversity of opinions regarding governance but emphasized that government systems evolve, with the State Executive Council and House of Assembly constitutionally empowered to enact and modify laws to address changing circumstances.
The former governor appealed to Benue citizens to support Governor Alia, stressing that the success of the current administration would benefit everyone.
Reflecting on his time in office, Ortom reiterated his commitment to defending the rights and heritage of the state.
He cited his administration’s establishment of the Community Volunteer Guards and enactment of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law as part of his efforts to secure the future of Benue.
Ortom noted that each administration operates under unique challenges, urging residents to respect these differences and approach governance issues constructively.
He called on the people to refrain from hostility and instead engage in dialogue that promotes progress and unity.
Additionally, Chief Ortom appealed for respect towards traditional rulers, emphasizing their role as custodians of Benue’s cultural heritage.
He extended his prayers and best wishes to Governor Alia, asking God to grant him wisdom to address the state’s development needs.
He also expressed support for Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, urging residents to back his efforts in the federal administration.
The former governor concluded by encouraging the people of Benue to come together in pursuit of collective growth and development.
