Troops from the Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade have captured Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer accused of orchestrating the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.

The operation took place on the night of December 14 in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, following intelligence reports that Wurgi was receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in a clash with a rival group.

Security sources confirmed that the troops apprehended Wurgi at the hospital, where he had been transported with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds.

Although two of his accomplices escaped, another individual involved in transporting Wurgi on a tricycle was arrested.

The late Emir of Gobir was kidnapped on July 9, 2024, in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

After failed negotiations involving cash and motorcycles, he was killed on August 22. Investigations revealed Wurgi’s direct involvement in the abduction and murder.

Wurgi, known for his arms smuggling activities with international connections, is reportedly related to infamous bandit leader Bello Turji.

His son, Sani Duna, is also implicated in banditry operations, serving as a getaway biker for Turji.

Authorities have hailed Wurgi’s arrest as a breakthrough in efforts to tackle banditry and terrorism in Northwest Nigeria.

He is currently being held at an undisclosed location, while security forces continue to pursue his fleeing accomplices.

Residents of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states have applauded the operation, expressing optimism that this development will reduce the region’s persistent insecurity and violence.
