Kemi Badenoch sparks controversy over remarks on Northern Nigeria

Must read

UK Conservative Party leader and Minister for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch, has sparked fresh controversy with remarks about her Nigerian heritage, particularly her views on Northern Nigeria.

In an interview with The Spectator, Badenoch stated, “I have nothing in common with the people from the north of the country, the Boko Haram where Islamism is.” Her comments have reignited criticism regarding her stance on Nigeria and its cultural diversity.

Badenoch, who has often expressed strong opinions about immigration and corruption in Nigeria, emphasized her Yoruba roots as her primary identity. “Being Yoruba is my true identity, and I refuse to be lumped with northern people of Nigeria, who ‘were our ethnic enemies,’ all in the name of being called a Nigerian,” she declared.

The comments have drawn backlash from Nigerian officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who accused Badenoch of tarnishing Nigeria’s image in British media.

Shettima suggested that she abandon her Nigerian surname if she no longer identifies with the country, condemning her statements as divisive.

Badenoch further distanced herself from Nigeria, stating in the interview, “I find it interesting that everybody defines me as being Nigerian. I identify less with the country than with the specific ethnicity (Yoruba).” She added that her loyalty lies exclusively with the United Kingdom, where she holds a senior government role.

Her remarks have triggered mixed reactions, with Phrank Shaibu, spokesperson for PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, urging critics to focus on governance instead of Badenoch’s personal views.
