The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has commended the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for conducting smooth and transparent elections to usher in new executive leaders.
In a statement issued on December 15 by Rabiu Ibrahim, the minister’s special assistant on media, the minister congratulated Muskilu Mojeed, CEO of Premium Times, and Ahmed Shekarau, Managing Director of Media Trust, on their re-election as President and Secretary of IPI Nigeria, respectively.
He also celebrated the re-election of four other officers.
Turning to the NUJ, Idris highlighted the significance of Malam Alhassan Yahaya’s election as President, making him the first leader of the union from the North-East.
Additionally, he noted the historic appointment of Abimbola Oyetunde as the NUJ’s first female Deputy National President, reflecting the union’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
The Minister acknowledged the support of the Imo State Government in hosting the NUJ elections, praising their hospitality and contributions to the process’s success.
Idris urged both organizations to prioritize ethical and responsible journalism, emphasizing the media’s role as “defenders of truth” in a democratic society.
“I encourage both unions to ensure that their members uphold the highest standards of journalism for the betterment of our democracy,” he said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to press freedom and pledged continued support for creating a conducive environment for free and accountable journalism in Nigeria.
