Must read

A devastating boat accident on the River Benue has claimed the lives of about 20 people.

The mishap occurred on Saturday as passengers traveled from Ocholonya in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State to Odenyi in Nasarawa Toto LGA, Nasarawa State, following their activities at Ocholonya market.

Eyewitness Fada Awatsu recounted the incident, explaining that the wooden boat was heavily overloaded with goods and passengers.

“Shortly after departure, there was a commotion among the passengers, and the boat capsized, sinking into the water,” he said.

The victims were reportedly mostly women and children from nearby communities, including Agatu, Agbashi, Ajima, Okpata, Rukubi, Ondoli, and Odadu in Doma LGA. So far, 19 bodies have been recovered from the river, while rescue operations are still ongoing in an effort to save others.

Hon. Melvin Ejeh, Chairman of Agatu LGA, confirmed the tragic incident. He attributed the accident to poor visibility caused by river shrubs.

“The sailor’s view was obstructed by shrubs, and when the canoe hit the trees, it capsized. The victims were returning to their villages in Nasarawa State after visiting the Ocholonya market,” he explained.

Hon. Ejeh revealed that over 20 bodies had been recovered and assured that rescue efforts would continue.

He also pledged to send council officials to console the bereaved families.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, has yet to confirm the incident as of the time of this report.

Authorities are urging caution and continued efforts to prevent further tragedies on the river.
