The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, has come under fire following allegations that he repeatedly advocated for a military takeover in Nigeria during private political meetings with stakeholders in the state.
Political stakeholders in Ondo have expressed concern over the statements, questioning why a prominent figure and leader of the ruling party would make such remarks. They further wondered if the APC Chairman had lost confidence in Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
A source, who spoke under anonymity, described the comments as shocking, stating, “The first time the Chairman mentioned military takeover, we were in disbelief. I thought he might have been joking or under the influence of something. But it became alarming when he repeated the same statement in subsequent meetings. I can’t understand his rationale. Maybe he is frustrated with the current state of our democracy, but we cannot support such an idea. We remain unrepentant democrats, no matter what.”
Another party member confirmed the allegations but downplayed their significance, suggesting the remarks were made jokingly. “Yes, the Chairman did mention a military takeover, but it was clearly a joke. Engr. Adetimehin is a seasoned politician who has worked hard for the success of democracy in this state and country. It is unfair to twist a lighthearted remark into something serious for political reasons.”
Efforts to reach Engr. Adetimehin for comments proved unsuccessful, as his phone line was switched off at the time of filing this report. However, the State APC Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, called for calm among party members, urging them not to misinterpret the Chairman’s statements.
