JUST IN: Fire engulfs Ibadan church, trapping worshippers

A devastating fire broke out at a Christ Apostolic Church parish in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday night, reportedly trapping several worshippers inside.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at Wisdom Estate, Road 1G, Olohunda Road, in the Lagelu Local Government Area, sources confirmed on Saturday morning.

Eyewitnesses reported that the church was holding a Friday vigil when the fire started.

One source recalled, “It happened around 9:30 p.m. Some worshippers had already fallen asleep, resting before the vigil resumed when the fire broke out.”

Another witness described the chaotic scene, mentioning an elderly woman who struggled to escape the flames due to her age and inability to move quickly.

A church member, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that people were still inside the church during the fire but declined to provide further details at the time.

The exact cause of the fire remains unclear as of the latest reports.

Akinyemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, confirmed the incident, stating that his team responded to the fire following information from Kunle Junaid.
