Wike lashes FCT Council Chair over security funding, questions capacity

Must read

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly criticized the chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, for claiming he lacks the resources to provide security vehicles for police operations.

Wike expressed his frustration during the handover of 50 operational vehicles to various security agencies in the FCT on Thursday.

He described Maikalangu’s remarks as “embarrassing” and questioned his leadership capability.

Maikalangu had explained that he could not fulfill requests from security agencies for vehicles, citing insufficient funds and capacity.

In response, Wike said:
“I find it shocking and deeply disturbing that a council chairman would publicly admit he has no capacity to support security agencies. You claim to be the chief security officer of your local government, yet you say you can’t provide vehicles or build police stations. Where is the revenue you collect going?

He continued: “When I was a council chairman, I built police stations, provided vehicles, and ensured basic infrastructure like water for security agencies. Security is everyone’s responsibility, including yours as chairman. If you lack the capacity, what exactly are you doing in that position?”

Wike also hinted at political consequences for Maikalangu in the next election, saying:
“You’ve admitted yourself that you have no capacity. Thank God this is live coverage. We will see what happens in the next election.”
