Wike defends FCT demolitions, says “let heaven fall”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stood by his decision to demolish properties deemed illegally built on government lands in Abuja, despite backlash from affected residents and property owners.

The demolitions, which have left many without homes, have sparked widespread criticism.

A construction company, Paullosa Nigeria Limited, recently raised concerns over a demolition notice issued by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) targeting its estate in the Lifecamp area.

However, Wike maintained his stance during a press briefing on Thursday, asserting that the affected structures were not only illegal but also posed security risks.

“Let heaven fall. It is even better that heaven comes down now so that we would not be fasting again to go to heaven,” Wike declared, emphasizing his determination to uphold the rule of law.

He dismissed allegations of intimidation or blackmail, vowing not to be swayed by threats.

“What is wrong is wrong; no amount of blackmail can stop us. Anyone who takes government land without formal approval will face the consequences. We don’t care if you are a civil rights activist or a television personality.”

Wike also issued a stern warning to individuals owing ground rents in the FCT, urging them to pay up or risk losing their property titles.

He stressed that ensuring security in the territory was a key priority of his administration.

During the presentation of 50 operational vehicles to security agencies, Wike called on them to enhance their efforts in safeguarding lives and property, particularly during the holiday season.

The distribution included 25 vehicles for the FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force, five each for the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, and the Nigerian Army Guards Brigade, and two each for the Abuja Naval Unit and the Nigerian Air Force Camp. The remaining six were allocated to Secretaries, Departments, and Agencies of the FCT.
