Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has signaled that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), could soon regain his freedom.

Kanu has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, facing treason charges.

During a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum in Abuja, Kalu disclosed that discreet negotiations with key authorities are underway to facilitate Kanu’s release.

He expressed confidence that the outcome of these talks would soon become evident, saying, “I am advocating for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

“It will happen soon. Please keep us in your prayers.”

Kalu also emphasized the need for collaboration among political leaders in the South East to drive regional development.

He encouraged lawmakers to actively participate in the ongoing constitutional amendment process and pledged his support for the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

He further urged the legislators to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stressing that the government is committed to the welfare of Ndi Igbo and Nigerians as a whole.

Highlighting the importance of unity, Kalu stated, “Networking is more powerful than money. Unity is strength.

“We must end the sit-at-home orders destroying our people and prioritize growth and cooperation.”

He advised the South East legislators to develop a collective agenda for the region and support initiatives that would enhance security, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and technology.

He also hinted at plans to organize regional town hall meetings to address these pressing issues.

Kingsley Ikoro, who led the delegation, praised Kalu’s leadership and described him as the political leader of the Southeast.

“You are our leader in the current political landscape. We are here to show solidarity and pledge our support,” Ikoro said, representing legislators from Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo states.
