The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, FNIPR, has reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to media freedom and the protection of the country’s civic space.
Speaking as the chairman at the 2024 Annual General Congress of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, the minister highlighted the critical role of the media in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Themed “Democracy, Media Freedom and the Imperative of Protecting Nigeria’s Civic Space,” the event brought together journalists, media executives, and stakeholders to discuss the intersection of press freedom, democratic resilience, and national development.
In his remarks, Idris emphasized the historic resilience of Nigeria’s democracy, now in its 25th year under the Fourth Republic.
“Democracy is here to stay in Africa’s most populous country,” he stated, attributing much of its success to the boldness and fearlessness of the Nigerian press.
He commended the media for its continued role in holding governments accountable and for driving social and political change.
The minister also addressed ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a transformative vision for economic diversification, human capital development, and inclusive growth.
He highlighted recent tax reforms aimed at reducing the burden on vulnerable Nigerians and reallocating savings from subsidy programs to critical sectors like infrastructure, education, and social investments.
Reflecting on media freedom, Idris asserted that Nigeria has enjoyed significant openness since 1999, despite occasional challenges.
He reiterated the government’s stance on upholding press rights, citing President Tinubu’s legacy as a pro-democracy advocate and his administration’s emphasis on judicial reform.
“Media freedom must come with responsibility,” Idris cautioned, urging stakeholders to balance their rights with accountability.
“He called for a “civil civic space” that accommodates diverse opinions and fosters healthy debate without vilifying opposing perspectives.
The minister concluded by urging media practitioners to amplify government efforts to build a stronger democracy and achieve national prosperity.
He lauded the IPI Nigeria for its role in advancing press freedom and nurturing journalistic excellence in the country.
The conference also marked the election of new executives for IPI Nigeria, further cementing its role as a key advocate for journalists’ rights and professional development.
