The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticized Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for commending the smooth conduct of Ghana’s presidential election.
In a recent video, Yakubu highlighted the peaceful nature of Ghana’s election and suggested Nigerian politicians could take inspiration from it.
However, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, responded in an interview with Punch, accusing Yakubu of bias in overseeing Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, which saw Bola Tinubu declared the winner.
Ifoh argued that the INEC Chairman should be the one learning from Ghana, citing the absence of ballot box snatching, electoral violence, or technical malfunctions during the Ghanaian polls.
He further alleged that Yakubu’s actions had contributed to Nigeria’s current challenges and demanded an apology from him to Nigerians.
“Despite moving on from the events of 2023, it’s shameful that Yakubu would comment on Ghana’s election when he should be reflecting on his own role.
“The Ghanaians spoke through their votes, which were transparently counted without controversy,” Ifoh said.
