Uphold citizens’ rights – NNPP Chieftain, Oguntoyinbo urges Tinubu, others

Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a prominent member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has called on both federal and state governments to remain steadfast in protecting the rights of the citizens.

He made this appeal in commemoration of World Human Rights Day, observed annually on October 10.

Oguntoyinbo noted that prioritizing human rights would help restore public trust in governance, strengthen national unity, and unlock the full potential of Nigerians.

He shared these thoughts in a statement released to journalists on Thursday.

In line with this year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” Oguntoyinbo underlined the role of human rights in addressing global challenges and reaffirmed their significance in democratic governance.

He noted that the occasion provides a timely reminder to the Nigerian government of its duty to safeguard citizens’ rights, which serve as a cornerstone of democracy worldwide.

Oguntoyinbo also expressed concern over the hardships faced by many Nigerians, attributing some of their struggles to the actions of government agents who, knowingly or unknowingly, infringe upon citizens’ rights.

Calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he urged the administration to educate security agencies on the importance of respecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens in a democratic society.

“Human Rights Day reminds us of the enduring values of equality, justice, and dignity for all people,” Oguntoyinbo stated. “I appeal to our President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a known advocate of human rights, to ensure that government agents, particularly security operatives, uphold their primary responsibility of protecting citizens’ rights and safety. Anything contrary is inconsistent with the principles of democracy.”

Oguntoyinbo further urged human rights advocates to exercise their freedoms responsibly.

“As we celebrate this important day, let us remember that the rights we enjoy must not infringe upon the rights of others. Where one person’s rights end, another’s begin.”
