Chaos erupted on Tuesday in Lagos State as a confrontation ensued between the police and suspected members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC).
The incident reportedly occurred near Taiwo Ago Palace in the Okota area, with sources claiming the situation quickly escalated.
“The OPC and the police are at odds, and now the police have called for reinforcements. They’re arresting everyone on the streets,” a witness disclosed.
Efforts by AFRIPOST to reach Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, for comments proved unsuccessful.
After declining repeated calls, he briefly responded, “Sorry, I can’t take this call right now.” Text messages seeking clarification on the situation also went unanswered.
Clashes between the police and OPC members have become increasingly common in Lagos and other parts of Southwest Nigeria.
In January 2023, at least one person lost their life during a confrontation between OPC members and the police in the Ojota area.
That incident occurred when security personnel dispersed a peaceful protest by “Yoruba Nation” activists with tear gas, reportedly acting on the orders of a policewoman.
A tricycle operator who witnessed the January clash claimed the demonstrators were nonviolent before the police intervened.
The recurring tensions highlight the strained relationship between the two groups, raising concerns about public safety in Lagos.
