NCC outlines measures to safeguard telecom infrastructure

Must read

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled its strategic plans to protect the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure, emphasizing its commitment to improving service delivery and boosting the telecom sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and CEO of the NCC, disclosed these measures during a workshop organized by the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NCCC).

He highlighted how an Executive Order issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paved the way for addressing critical challenges in the industry, including vandalism, damage to fiber-optic cables, and restricted access to telecom facilities.

Dr. Maida noted that such challenges have previously caused significant financial losses and disrupted vital services.

He stressed the importance of the workshop in addressing the urgent need to safeguard the country’s Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).

He praised the collaborative efforts of government agencies, regulators, and industry leaders in tackling infrastructure issues, emphasizing that partnerships are vital for building secure and reliable communication systems in Nigeria and across the West African region.

Dr. Maida commended President Tinubu, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for their unwavering commitment to protecting critical infrastructure.

He highlighted how the dedication has positive implications for the nation’s economic growth.

Addressing the long-standing issue of Right of Way (RoW), Dr. Maida lamented the impact of restricted access caused by property owners and government agencies.

These restrictions, he explained, have hindered network expansion and service quality. However, he expressed optimism that the Executive Order provides a robust framework to resolve these challenges.

Looking ahead, Dr. Maida assured stakeholders that the NCC will intensify efforts to raise public awareness and collaborate with relevant parties to safeguard telecom assets, ensuring secure and efficient communication services for all Nigerians.
