Fresh indications suggest that Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi, his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, may be considering a merger ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Paul Ibe, spokesperson for Atiku, revealed that both politicians have been in talks, exploring ways to form a united opposition capable of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ibe emphasized the need for collaboration to address Nigeria’s deepening challenges.
“Nigerians deserve better than what they are currently getting. The state of the nation has never been this dire, and hope seems nonexistent,” Ibe remarked.
“Atiku Abubakar has always championed unity among opposition parties as the only viable path to dislodging the incompetent and clueless government of the APC.”
He added that lessons learned from the 2023 elections have motivated the ongoing discussions between Atiku and Obi.
“All parties, including Atiku Abubakar, have reflected on the mistakes of 2023. These lessons have set the stage for forward-looking conversations about working together to achieve common goals,” he said.
When asked if Atiku would be willing to step down for Peter Obi in 2027, Ibe declined to give a definitive answer but maintained that “all options are on the table.”
