Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the need for a relentless and sustained approach to combating corruption, warning that inconsistent efforts will only allow it to persist.
Speaking during a virtual session titled “Boiling Point Arena” on Sunday night, Obasanjo expressed deep concern over the pervasive nature of corruption in Nigeria, describing it as a systemic issue that requires proactive leadership to address effectively.
“Corruption is like a babanriga,” Obasanjo remarked, referencing a traditional robe. “When you try to fold it on one side, it unravels on the other.
“And if you carry it on both sides, your hands are tied. The moment you let go, it falls apart again. This illustrates how deeply rooted and multifaceted corruption is in our society.”
The former president criticized the current leadership for fostering poverty in the nation, asserting that fighting corruption must become a continuous, collective effort transcending administrations.
“It’s not something that can be tackled by a single regime or even two. The fight must be persistent and unwavering, with no lapses, or it will quickly spread.”
Addressing the qualities of effective leadership, Obasanjo stated that only divinely appointed leaders succeed.
He condemned leaders propelled by selfish motives or “enthroned by Satan,” predicting their inevitable failure.
His comments underscore the critical role of leadership in eradicating corruption and addressing Nigeria’s systemic challenges.
