The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an investigation into an incident where a passenger physically assaulted its officers during a routine traffic stop in Lagos State.

The Corps has also ordered the immediate prosecution of the passenger involved.

In a statement released by Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer, it was revealed that the incident occurred on November 7, 2024, along the Oko-Ado Lekki-Epe Expressway within the Lekki Unit Command area. At approximately 3:54 PM, a patrol team stopped a Toyota Corolla, with registration number EPE690HH, for a seatbelt violation.

Upon requesting the vehicle’s documentation, the officers discovered that the vehicle’s papers had expired in December 2022, prompting them to impound the car.

While the driver complied with the arrest, a female passenger became aggressive, verbally assaulting the officers and threatening to take legal action against them for performing their duties.

The situation escalated when the passenger attempted to incite sympathy from other motorists by creating a scene. When her attempts failed, she physically assaulted the officers, an act captured in a video.

Despite the officers’ attempts to calm her down, the passenger continued the assault even after the vehicle was impounded at the Lekki Command.

In response, the Unit Commander contacted the Divisional Police Officer at Ajah Police Station, who promptly dispatched a team of officers to arrest both the passenger and the driver for further investigation.

The Corps Marshal praised the officers involved for their professionalism and restraint during the incident and reiterated the commitment to prosecute the passenger involved in the assault.
