Edo 2024: Tribunal begins hearing on petitions challenging Okpebholo’s victory

The 2024 Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has officially commenced pre-hearing sessions to address multiple cases seeking the removal of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

A total of seven petitions have been filed, challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of Okpebholo as the winner of the September 21 governorship election.

Among the petitioners is the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who finished second in the election.

Also contesting the outcome is Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata, who placed third in the results announced by INEC on September 22.

The petitions alleged irregularities and discrepancies in the electoral process, claiming these issues significantly impacted the election’s final outcome.

The tribunal’s proceedings will determine the validity of these allegations and Governor Okpebholo’s continued tenure.
