PDP crisis worsens as Wike’s faction moves against Atiku loyalists

The internal rift within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified, with the faction aligned with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike stepping up efforts to marginalize supporters of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Sources within the party have disclosed that Wike’s camp is preparing to take decisive disciplinary action, including suspensions and expulsions, targeting members at various levels—state, local government, and ward—who oppose their agenda.

This action comes as Wike’s faction continues to back the embattled acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, whose leadership has been heavily criticized. Insiders report that key figures within Wike’s camp are focused on consolidating power by neutralizing opposition, particularly those critical of Damagum and his National Working Committee (NWC).

One major target is Ikenga Ugochinyere, a vocal PDP lawmaker whose criticism has reportedly drawn the ire of the Wike faction.

“There is a calculated effort to act against anyone, including public figures, who challenge their position,” a party insider stated.

Some members of the NWC have reportedly reduced their attendance at meetings due to the ongoing disunity, while others are biding their time until the party sets up a National Elective Convention planning committee next year.

The crisis has further divided the PDP Governors’ Forum, with a stark divide between those supporting Damagum’s leadership and those calling for his replacement.

Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba) have pledged their support for Damagum.

Meanwhile, PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), along with Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, are opposed to Damagum continuing in an acting capacity.
