The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the critical role of public relations in fostering constructive dialogue on tax reforms during a national discourse organized by the Kaduna Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Speaking on the theme “Tax Reforms: The Role of Public Relations in Fostering Constructive Dialogue for National Economic Renaissance,” the minister lauded the efforts of the NIPR in promoting purposeful communication and mutual understanding in addressing critical national issues.
He commended the Kaduna chapter for aligning effectively with the national vision for advancing public relations in Nigeria.
Minister Idris highlighted taxation as a cornerstone of democracy and societal progress, quoting Benjamin Franklin’s timeless observation: “In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.”
He acknowledged the challenges facing Nigeria’s tax administration, including outdated systems, implementation flaws, and public mistrust. However, he stressed that the ongoing review of tax laws and fiscal reforms is an essential step toward sustainable economic growth and national development.
“It is inspiring to see Nigerians from all walks of life engaging in robust discussions on these reforms,” he said, noting that such engagements embody the essence of democracy.
He reiterated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to open communication and stakeholder collaboration, emphasizing that public concerns would be addressed comprehensively.
As fiscal reforms unfold under the Renewed Hope agenda, Minister Idris urged public relations practitioners to play a vital role in bridging the communication gap and building public trust.
“By facilitating purposeful communication and transparent promotion of ideas, public relations can foster a culture of collaboration and progress,” he stated.
The minister assured Nigerians that the administration remains steadfast in upholding participatory democracy while implementing reforms that devolve more resources to states, local governments, and citizens.
He called on the NIPR and other stakeholders to support the government’s efforts in ensuring effective public engagement and understanding of the reforms.
The event, attended by communication experts and policy stakeholders, underscored the importance of leveraging public relations to build trust and drive inclusive dialogue for national progress.
