BREAKING: Bawumia concedes defeat in Ghana’s Presidential election, congratulates Mahama

Ghana’s Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, has conceded defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He acknowledged the victory of opposition leader and former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a speech delivered on Sunday, Mr Bawumia stated that his party’s internal data showed the NDC had won both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

He extended his congratulations to Mr. Mahama and commended the electoral process, emphasizing his commitment to democracy and peace.

The elections were held across the country on Saturday, with millions of Ghanaians casting their votes.

Although the Electoral Commission of Ghana has not yet released the official results, Mr Bawumia’s concession signals the likely outcome of the closely watched race.

Observers have noted the high stakes of this election, as it pitted the NPP and NDC—Ghana’s two dominant political parties—against each other in a contest that could shape the country’s future.

Mr Bawumia’s acceptance of the results is seen as a significant step toward ensuring a smooth transition and preserving Ghana’s reputation for peaceful democratic processes.
