Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has issued a formal apology to the acting National Chairman and National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagun and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, over allegedly defamatory remarks he made during a podcast interview.
In the podcast, Adeyanju accused Damagun of “serving tea” and Anyanwu of “serving kilishi” at the residence of Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.
He also alleged that Damagun and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, were working as moles for Tinubu within the PDP.
Following these statements, Damagun and Anyanwu threatened legal action, citing defamation.
In response, Adeyanju’s law firm, Deji Adeyanju & Partners, issued a retraction and apology in a letter dated December 6.
The letter, signed by Zainab Otega, clarified that the comments were not intended to defame the PDP leaders and expressed regret for any harm caused.
The letter stated: “Our client’s statements on the podcast were taken out of context.
“The comments were part of a broader discussion about the need for the PDP leadership to serve as a robust opposition to the ruling party.
“We withdraw the statements and apologize for any perceived defamation.”
It further emphasized Adeyanju’s commitment to advocating for Nigeria’s progress and urging leaders to prioritize the public good over personal interests.
