The Federal Government has issued a directive to teaching hospitals across the country to activate alert systems in response to the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has spread to 29 countries worldwide.
In a circular dated December 5, 2024, with reference number DHS/INSPDIV/017/VOL.1/46, Dr. O.N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, highlighted concerns about the variant’s growth advantage over existing strains and its potential public health implications.
Titled “Letter of Conveyance in Respect of the Newly Detected XEC COVID-19 Strain,” the circular stated:
“I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, reported in Australia and now present in 29 countries globally. This variant has demonstrated a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
The directive urged hospitals to remain vigilant and promptly identify patients presenting with COVID-like symptoms. It also called for strengthened collaboration between hospital committees and relevant stakeholders to facilitate data sharing and implement enhanced monitoring protocols.
The letter emphasized the importance of timely communication with the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies to ensure an effective and coordinated response to the new strain.
It concluded with an assurance of the permanent secretary’s support, stating:
“Please accept, as always, the assurances of the permanent secretary’s warm regards.”
