Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has weighed in on the rising tension surrounding the Emir of Kano’s palace, urging restraint amid the escalating security situation.
Taking to his X handle, Sani stated, “In the interest of peace, there should be serious restraint in the application of force, might, and power over the Kano emirship tussle.”
AFRIPOST had reported that tension heightened early Friday morning as heavily armed police officers surrounded the palace.
Reports indicate that security operatives arrived as early as 6 a.m., sparking speculation about the reason behind the deployment.
Sources suggested that the security presence may be linked to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi’s intention to appoint a district head for Bichi town, a move that appears to have reignited the longstanding Kano emirship controversy.
This latest development follows a series of disputes over the Kano emirship.
In May, Governor Abba Yusuf dethroned former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero while he was out of the state, reinstating Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano.
Sanusi was immediately relocated to the Kofar Kudu palace, while Bayero returned to Kano and settled at the Nassarawa mini palace.
The leadership changes have since triggered legal battles and political confrontations.
The roots of the crisis date back to 2020 when former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje created four new emirates in Kano, a move widely viewed as an attempt to diminish Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II’s influence.
Sanusi’s subsequent suspension by the state government drew widespread criticism and sparked protests across the country.
