Must read

A team from the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, arrived in Accra to observe Ghana’s upcoming general elections set for December 7.

This was announced by WAEF’s Communications Officer, Wealth Dickson Ominabo, in a statement issued in Abuja.

Jonathan, upon arrival, urged Ghanaians to prioritize patriotism and work towards ensuring the elections are peaceful, free, and transparent.

The delegation also includes former Burkinabe Prime Minister and ECOWAS President Kadre Ouedraogo, the Executive Director of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Ann Iyonu, and Jonathan’s Special Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze.

Commending Ghana’s longstanding commitment to democratic principles, Jonathan highlighted the nation’s history of peaceful political transitions as a symbol of democratic progress for Africa.

He described the upcoming elections as another opportunity for Ghanaians to reaffirm their dedication to democracy, stability, and development.

The delegation encouraged Ghana’s Electoral Commission and security agencies to remain impartial and fulfil their roles in ensuring credible elections.

They urged the Electoral Commission to guarantee transparency and fairness in the process to foster trust among voters and stakeholders.

Security forces were also called upon to act professionally, remain neutral, and maintain a peaceful atmosphere by safeguarding election materials, polling stations, and citizens.

As political campaigns near their conclusion, WAEF appealed to political parties and candidates to avoid hate speech, inflammatory language, and personal attacks, emphasizing the importance of peaceful and respectful discourse.

Jonathan further appealed to all stakeholders, including political parties and their supporters, to respect the integrity of the electoral process and resolve disputes through lawful means.

He called on the youth to abstain from violence and intimidation during and after the elections, urging Ghanaians to uphold the country’s democratic tradition by rejecting actions that could compromise the election’s credibility.

Highlighting Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy, Jonathan encouraged citizens to protect this legacy by working together to ensure the elections are peaceful, fair, and transparent.
