The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to hold a critical meeting with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in January 2025.
The announcement was made by the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, during an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Wabara, the meeting aims to address lingering internal conflicts threatening the party’s unity.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Umar Damagum, the BoT criticized the repeated delays in convening a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Many party members have voiced frustrations over the NWC’s handling of key issues, with some even calling for Damagum’s resignation.
“The party is facing self-inflicted challenges,” Wabara stated. “As custodians of the PDP’s legacy, it is our responsibility to uphold its integrity and ensure it remains a beacon of hope for democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
Wabara emphasized the importance of unity, urging party leaders to set aside personal ambitions for the greater good of the party.
He also highlighted concerns over the impact of the crisis on the PDP’s public image and its ability to effectively oppose the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his address, Wabara said: “The continued delay by the NWC in convening a NEC meeting undermines the trust and confidence of our members. While challenges are inevitable in governance, adhering to commitments is essential. The BoT expects the NWC to act promptly to address pressing issues and chart a clear way forward.”
He further called on the party’s governors to strengthen their collaboration, describing them as the foundation of the PDP’s success at the state level.
“Dialogue, collaboration, and shared responsibility are essential for overcoming these trying times,” he added.
The BoT reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace within the party, beginning with a renewed effort to engage with Nyesom Wike in the new year.
“The search for lasting unity and peace in the PDP continues,” Wabara concluded.
