The Joint Security Task Force in Imo State, known as Operation Udoka, has uncovered shallow graves in Aku Community, Okigwe Local Government Area.
These graves are alleged to be the burial sites for victims of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The discovery was made during a clearance operation in the community, which has reportedly been under the control of a suspected IPOB leader, Ifeanyi Okorienta, also known as “Gentle.”
During the raid, security forces also recovered stolen vehicles, arms, ammunition, and explosive devices.
Addressing the situation, Brigadier-General Usman Lawal, Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade, accompanied by the State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, and Imo Governor’s Security Adviser, Joseph Ogbonna, emphasized the joint effort between security agencies and the state government to eradicate insecurity linked to IPOB and ESN in the region.
Lawal revealed that 20 individuals have been arrested and are currently in custody.
He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure lasting peace in the area.
The Aku community, located near the Abia State border, has long been a hotspot for criminal activities, including kidnappings, killings, and harassment, allegedly perpetrated by IPOB members.
Security officials believe the ongoing operations will restore safety and stability to the region, especially as the holiday season approaches.
