Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has appeared before a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to face allegations of character defamation against prominent legal figure Aare Afe Babalola, SAN.
Farotimi was apprehended in Lagos on Tuesday by the Ekiti State Police Command and was brought to court on Wednesday morning at approximately 10:25 am.
The activist is being charged with 16 counts of defamation related to claims made in his recently released book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
The charges allege that the book contains statements damaging to the reputation of Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University and a distinguished leader in Nigeria’s legal and educational sectors.
