Dr. Joseph Haruna Kigbu, a former legislator in the House of Representatives, has reportedly been kidnapped by armed assailants while en route to Jos, Plateau State.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday along a stretch of road between Nunku in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and Gwantu in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The attackers, firing sporadically to create chaos among drivers in the vicinity, are said to have engaged Dr Kigbu’s police escort in a gunfight.
Tragically, the officer was killed during the confrontation while attempting to prevent the abduction.
Residents of nearby communities corroborated the incident, highlighting that the location has long been plagued by criminal activities.
Efforts to obtain a statement from DSP Ramhan Nansel, spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, were unsuccessful.
Dr. Kigbu, a Fellow of the West African College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, served the Lafia/Obi federal constituency in Nasarawa State from 2011 to 2015 under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) before later joining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Over his career spanning 34 years in medicine, including 20 years as a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, he has contributed significantly to healthcare across Nigeria and the broader West African region.
