The House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, to unfreeze the accounts of the National Social Investment Programmes Agency (NSIPA) within 72 hours.
Lawmakers believe that restoring access to the frozen accounts is essential to restart the agency’s various programmes without delay.
They also urged the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to address any administrative hurdles impeding the effective operation of NSIPA initiatives.
These decisions were made after adopting a motion sponsored by the deputy speaker alongside 20 other members.
Legislators expressed concern that NSIPA, despite its critical role in alleviating poverty, empowering youth, and fostering economic inclusivity, has been hampered by limited funding, operational bottlenecks, and the freezing of its accounts.
The suspension of NSIPA’s programmes and the freezing of its accounts were reportedly linked to allegations of financial mismanagement by previous handlers, prompting investigations by anti-corruption and security agencies.
