The Nigeria Police Force has debunked a viral video showing uniformed personnel scooping fuel from the wreckage of an accident tanker, stating that those involved are not members of the Nigeria Police.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police clarified that the individuals seen in the video are uniformed personnel from a neighbouring francophone country.
Their camouflage uniforms, which bear a resemblance to those of the Nigeria Police, caused the misidentification.
It was also noted that the individuals in the video were speaking in French, not English or any Nigerian language.
“The viral video circulating in the media was released to discredit the Nigeria Police Force. We strongly condemn the spread of such disinformation and unverified content aimed at tarnishing the image of the force,” the statement read.
The police emphasized that such actions not only damage the reputation of the force but also undermine national unity and the credibility of institutions tasked with ensuring public safety.
ACP Adejobi reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, to maintaining discipline, professionalism, and public safety.
He urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it to prevent the spread of falsehoods.
The police assured the public that the force remains dedicated to protecting lives and property and will continue to uphold its mandate with integrity.
