Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed confidence that the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State will strengthen Governor Siminalayi Fubara, molding him into a formidable political leader.
Jonathan shared this perspective on Sunday during the 1st Etche Festival of Food, Art, and Culture Exhibition held in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.
AFRIPOST reports that Governor Fubara is embroiled in a political feud with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking at the event, Jonathan acknowledged that political antagonism is a common hurdle for leaders and urged Fubara to remain focused on governance despite the challenges.
“I know you (Governor Fubara) are facing challenges. This is your first time holding a top political office, and it’s not unusual to face difficulties,” Jonathan said.
“But no one becomes a General without fighting wars. These challenges are preparing you to become a political General. With your dedication and the support of the Rivers people, God will see you through,” he added.
The former president also called on the people of Rivers State to support Governor Fubara and ensure peace in the region, emphasizing its importance to the Niger Delta and the nation’s economy.
“We need a peaceful Rivers State because it is the center of the Niger Delta. Creating instability here will disrupt the Niger Delta and harm Nigeria’s economy,” Jonathan said.
He added, “Let the Governor remain calm and focused on his work. Political offices are temporary, and after his tenure, another person will take over. There is no need for unnecessary strife over political positions.
Jonathan commended the traditional ruler of Etche, Eze Ken O. Nwala, for his achievements in 10 years on the throne and praised the Etche people for their contributions to agriculture, earning the region its reputation as the food basket of Rivers State.
Governor Fubara, who was conferred with a traditional title alongside Jonathan, expressed gratitude for the honor and reassured the people of his commitment to improving their lives.
He promised increased government attention and development projects, attributing his administration’s focus on Etche to the people’s unwavering support.
“I will not disappoint you,” Fubara said, adding that Jonathan’s presence at the event was a symbol of humility and encouragement for his administration.
