Rivers Council Boss accuses Wike of using police to close market

Must read

Chijioke Ihunwo, the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, has alleged that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, is behind the closure of the Oginigba Market.

Ihunwo claimed Wike orchestrated the market’s shutdown using police officers, specifically CSP Mohammed, the Anti-Cultism Commander, and CSP Masalachi, the Commander of C41, to enforce the closure.

In a statement on Monday, Ihunwo accused the officers of invading the market, deploying tear gas, and shooting to intimidate traders and residents.

He described the incident as an unjustifiable interference in local government affairs and a violation of the Oginigba community’s rights.

“I received reports that armed policemen have taken over the Oginigba Market, which was opened by the local government. I immediately reached out to the authorities,” Ihunwo said. “I contacted the Assistant Commissioner of Police for Operations and the Commissioner of Police, who later returned my call. I informed him about the situation.”

He further criticized the police actions, stating:
“Why would officers invade the market, firing shots and using tear gas against traders? It is unfortunate that the Nigeria Police Force has allowed itself to be used by politicians who aim to destabilize Rivers State.”

Ihunwo alleged that the market, owned by the Oginigba people, was unfairly targeted. He insisted that any attempt to acquire land must involve due payment to the rightful owners.

He also accused Wike of ordering the market’s closure and urged calm among residents as the local government seeks a resolution. “We will address this issue legitimately and ensure justice for the Oginigba people,” Ihunwo reassured.

The chairman appealed to the Inspector General of Police to rein in officers allegedly misusing their power. “The police are creating unnecessary crises in our state. The land belongs to the Oginigba people, and they should be allowed to trade freely,” he stated.

Despite the tensions, Ihunwo reiterated his commitment to resolving the matter peacefully and protecting the interests of the community. He emphasized that his administration would not be drawn into unnecessary conflicts but would continue to uphold the rights of the people.
